Response: iPad Mania

I'm still not totally convinced that a significant number of people are reading magazines on iPads, but maybe that's because I don't have the expendable income for such a device (Kindle Fire all the way bro). However, it is exciting to be designing for such a visually-dominated platform. Hooray for beautiful blown up pictures and bright, saturated colors!

True life: I hate the J-school. I cannot wait to graduate and be far, far away from Columbia. However, this is one of the few times I have really appreciated the school and felt like my 30 grand in tuition might just pay off (figuratively of course, because literally would be a GD miracle). To know that we are getting experience that not even professionals are getting is incredible. My resume is doing backflips in triumph. And we get to work on TWO different apps/platforms. I can truly say that during that 20 minute info sesh on the Vox iPad apps, I felt like I made the right choice in school and felt confident in my post-graduate, seeking employment status.

However, I do think it would be nice to see some attention paid to the other tablets that have hit the market recently. I understand the iPad is sorta superior to them, but people are buying other tablets. Like the Kindle Fire. It's affordable, small, is run by Amazon (who rulez with a z) and does everything I need it to do for 200 dollars. Yeah, I was hired by Amazon to do some promo work. Ya know, since so many people read my advanced design blog. But in all seriousness, the Android tablets are more affordable and I feel like there's a market there that's being ignored. At my job, my boss, a programmer, tests apps and mobile sites on every single kind of device to make sure that the most people can access it. Although I suppose the iPad bias has something to do with MU being up Apple's....well I won't go there. But you know what I mean.
