I knew I always loved Wintour for her fierce, "I-know-what-I-want" style (both editing and clothing), but I never expected to fall in love with the creative director, Grace Coddington. First of all, can we all just agree that she was a total babe when she was modeling? Ok good. Besides that, her vision that has shaped Vogue for years is beautiful. She takes the most pride in her work that I've ever seen. Like she commented, she's probably one of the only art directors that actually gets in there and does everything right down to putting shoes on models' feet. She's as big of a control freak as Wintour, but it's refreshing to see such passion and vision in a world that prides itself on being fast and first.
Seeing this movie again after having decided my career path provided much more inspiration than my first viewing. The first time I was just obsessed with the amount of influence Wintour had on the fashion world. This time around though I saw how demanding the work of a creative director is. Obviously, that's my end goal, to be in Coddington's figurative shoes at some magazine (I'd rather be in Wintour's actual shoes). However, I'm going to have to put my big girl pants on and find my voice before I can get there. Reaffirming my opinion, especially a creative opinion, to someone higher-up, and even on the same level as me, is not exactly my forte. I roll over fairly easy unless I'm uber passionate about something because of my lack of confidence. Hopefully by the end of this class I'll have gained some of that stuff that has alluded me for so long.
Here are some pictures from my all-time favorite Vogue spread (of course it's Alice in Wonderland). I think you can see Coddington's style in them in comparison to the 20s story she worked on in the movie. The photos are taken by the ever-wonderful Annie Leibovitz. Enjoy :)
